It's an urban myth that Eskimos have a hundred words for snow. Apparently they have no more than we do but they're in compound form like 'wetsnow', drysnow', slushysnow'.
I could come up with a jolly compound or two.
But I'm far too polite to repeat them here.
Every plan this week reverts to Plan B, then C, and when Plan G evaporates in a puff of snow, you give up and watch afternoon TV.
We trudge to the local shop for supplies in minus 2 with added wind chill. The dogs get lost in the snow and Peg bursts out of her coat again , looks at me pitifully with ice globules hanging off her chops and pleads 'why for you make us do this?'
The fact is we are wimps. We are not cut our for such severity - and for us it is severe. We can go a decade with mild wet winters where the rail networks' only problem is 'leaves on track'. Then bam, It hits us. It hit us last winter and this winter it's just the same and suddenly we're all talking about snow chains, shovels and proper grippy boots.
On the plus side, if we hadn't been holed up the last couple of days, I would never have realized just how many people still want to Escape To The Country, Relocate, Relocate, flaming Relocate and buy A Place in the Sun. - usually with an eye watering budget and a sneer.
And I wouldn't have eaten all those Pringles.
And Peg wouldn't have made such headway with her book.

Peg has definitely got the right idea. Curled up with a book is the only answer at the moment x
Love the photo of Peg!
I can't remember the last time we in the central south had snow before Christmas; if we get any at all it is in Jan-March or April. Still, in true New Forest format we've had it for a day and half and it's due to thaw this evening.
Sometimes I wish I lived in a place where the weather was predictable.. but what would be the fun in that?
At least with a broken leg I don't normally get further than Plan B in the snow. Plan A being 'leave the house'. ;-)
The novelty has most definitely worn off now. Roll on summer.
Thank you! Just what I need today - a phot of a cute dog to cheer me up! And thanks for your FB comment - bummer, eh?
LOVE the photo of Peg! And the one of all three pets huddled together.
We've also had severe weather here, for Irish standards. The only thing I'm really worried about is the water pipes freezing like they did for many people last year. Us included, but luckily it was only the outside pipe that burst, turning the whole garden into a skating rink. At least we still had water inside.
Plan H, as in stay HOME, sounds good to me!
I wish you well. Look on the bright side – it’ll all be over in 4 or 5 months time. Let that be a comfort to you. Snow use crying over spilt icicles, if you’ll excuse such a slushy expression.
All the best, Boonie
Poor Grumps gets angry every time he comes in from the garden and has to contend with the snowballs that have accumulated around his fluffy feet. I've taken some beautiful photographs, but I'm glad the sun is now out and we can get back to normal again. What is that? Oh, of course, it's rain.
I love the way teabag curls up so tightly. Grumps does the same and I always wonder how he manages to breath properly.
Aww look at them all huggled together in harmony, I bet it's so cute in your house! If they don't really want to leave the house (like their owner?) then you'll just have to build them an en-suite toilet complete with occasional treadmill (at other times it can double as an airer for your smalls). Sorted.
Notmorebloodysnow, as the Eskimos say. Or, rather, the Inuit.
Loving the last image of Professor Peg :)
I've opted for Plan H,
"Hibernation" draw the curtains, yank up the heating, turn up the gramaphone and just pretend it's not snowing! ;-) So far so good, although we now only have a drop of milk left in the fridge. My boots are made for walking - tomorrow! Maybe.
Tfx
Well, that's it. I'm going out to buy a snow shovel before the dreaded snowmonster hits us here in NY. You're right, preparation is all.
I could absolutely eat Peg's little face. That is the best picture EVER.
What a very photogenic lot you have - and I'm so glad Peg is enjoying her book. Nothing like snuggling down in this weather is tehre? Hope it melts soon.... and thanks for a very cheering post!
Ah-relocation,relocation-when we where all rich-house prices 2007-winter-wonderland-let us sit by the fire and tell tall tales of Erin being the second richest country in the world-and us all millionaires.
Let tears (of laughter)stream down our cheeks as we remember-thanks Kirstie and thanks Lane for the memories
I see your little Eskimos don't believe in that nose to nose thing,Lane.
Ah Pegs, so sorry you've "outgrown" your coat--SHE knew that was a problem last year. You have to wonder what's so urgent that a new one was not found. Are you reading "Rose in the Storm" by Border Collie Rose via Jon Katz? Give me a week or so and we'll discuss--it's in my TBR stack.
Aw, how cute :o)
My husband keeps joking that I should be used to these temperatures being a Northern Bird, but I can't seem to tolerate them as well as I used to.
I want the summer back please.
Pegs has outgrown her coat? Oh dear. Has Pegs been at the Pringles too, perhaps?
The silly snow could at least have waited until we all had copious supplies of Baileys & Quality Street to keep us going. Honestly, inconsiderate or what?
At least when you get it, it doesn't last till next April like us Canucks. We wear our ability to handle snow drifts up over our fences and -40 C winters like a badge of honour. Otherwise, we would go crazy methinks.
LOVE the photo of Peg! Har!
Oh, isn't it true about the snow words? I always thought it was. How disappointing.
I knew those Eskimos were fakes. There's no way someone could have that many words for snow.
Do let us know what Peggy thought of that book. I'm glad she was tucked under that blanket while reading it.
See - See! I keep saying I'm getting tired of 9 months of winter here in Alberta. Now you can see what it is like. Except - we had -40C for over a week - plus it snowed! I thought there was a point where it got too cold to snow. Apparently I don't know when that is. Drats!
Every winter I wish I lived somewhere warm. Especially at the start of it. Our summers seem so incredibly short. Everyone else is enjoying green leaves and flowers - like you guys - and we have a foot of snow already.
Ah well. Good thing about it - it melts and gives the earth the moisture it needs. Bad thing about it - everything.
The snow was good fun when I was watching it on the news from Tenerife. Not quite so good when my car was buried under 2 foot of it at Gatwick! Not going to get any sympathy for that am I? Nope, though not :-)
I've not been to the pub foreight days1 Terrible!
Our cottage is finally warm as I have thrown caution to the wind and will bury my head when the leccy bill arrives.
Let's all snuggle down, it will soon be Spring! (at least there's no weeding to do.....
Helen H - If only we could spend every day like that when it's cold.
Juniper - It must be all the more hazardous for you in this weather. Plan A sounds very daunting you brave thing.
Queenie - couldn't agree more. Even spring will do.
Chris - your poor Ma. I wish her all the very best. So does Peg.
Babaloo - fingers crossed for your pipes this year. You certainly don't need an ice rink in the garden. Jack would not approve:-)
Boonie S - you do the best puns. Always make me smile. Thank you:-)
Debs C - those ice globules are most inconvenient. Poor Grumps.
I like the way they curl up too. Teabag always looks like a bunt cake:-)
Debs R - What a great idea. That's one for Dragon's Den. A multi tasking gadget like that would be a hit:-)
Dumdad - the snow's gone so now I'm moaning nomoreice. I bet the Inuits have compounds for that too:-)
Tom Foolery - I like Plan H. Stock up, lock up and hunker down. Then tell me when it's all over:-)
Marcheline - glad you like the photo. I think she's reading one of daughter's Twilight books. Hope it doesn't give her any ideas:-)
Flowerpot - thank you. Hope it's getting easier down you way too fp.
Felix - Absolutely - where people bought 'property' instead of homes and talked about 'updating' and 'space'. Oh how we laughed:-)
Faye - Pegs says- SHE hasn't bothered to buy a new coat because if a new one is bought then I might just get bigger and bigger. Personally I think I need a few extra pounds in this weather. I will ask Her to get that book. Looks better than my current reading:-)
Karen - I want it back too - or a new one to start early:-)
Jen - silly inconsiderate snow should start on Christmas Eve and be gone by Boxing Day.
And Baileys and Quality Street sounds a perfect combination. But not for Peg:-)
Maureen - I take my hat off you hardy people. Respect. We are such wimps in comparison!
fran - I know it's disappointing. Maybe we should just stick our head in the snow and carry on believing it's true:-)
Nora - if there's a blanket (and there are lots in our house) there will be a dog hiding under it. You can never plonk yourself down anywhere, just in case:-)
Aims - -40. I can't even imagine such a thing.
We are soft and spoilt by a temperate climate and there's you doing battle with horribly long winters. In comparison we've got it easy. Like I said to Maureen - respect:-)
Denise - You poor thing. That must have been awful to come back to. (You believe my sincerity don't you:-)
Grumpy Old Ken - oh my word. It must be bad up your way:-) Dial a Pint?
cait - Argh the bills. I'm not going to think of them.
And yes, no weeding or other tedious garden chores. One plus point out of lots of negatives:-)
I have just learnt my nephew is on the production team of Escape to the Country, Run to the Fun, Fly Me to the Moon, or some such, and will not take a cold-nosed sneer of such life enhancing programmes from anyone. Be warned.
DOT - I take back my sneers.
No, I don't really although Fly Me to the Moon would be a good destination for some of the participants. They could 'update' it all they like:-)
Erm, I love the snow! *runs away and hides from angry mob*
Doh, I'm late here. I hope Peg's finished her book now!
I love snow, I really do, but when I'm busy trying to get parcels here, or get parcels elsewhere, I can really do without it.
I am so with you on the Relocate people. Fly 'em to the moon, I say. :)
