Eyes#2

I have new eyes. It's amazing. I can see you. And you. And my goodness, that's a hat you're wearing, not your hair. And you over there. You're male when I could have sworn....

I'd been been wearing the wrong prescription for way too long and what I thought (or was told) were ocular migraines, was in fact PVD. If you don't like the words jelly and eyes in the same sentence, then don't click on the link. It's a bit of a squeamish combination. At least it is for me. The Teenager has no such squeams and has taken to contact lenses in the last couple of weeks like a .... well, a teenager concerned with looks. I went along with her whilst she had an hour long trial to learn how to use them and I couldn't watch. All that pulling back of eyelids and talk of fluids was too much. You'd think I'd be used to it as The Younger One was born with Nystagmus and a squint and spent much of her early life having various eyeball-y tests. But no.

And in other news a poem of mine is going to be in Issue 4 of First Edition, available from all good WH Smiths and Borders (and online) from May 7th. I am just a little bit pleased about this. Did you detect that rather subtle understatement? Did you? And whilst we're on the subject, fellow blogger and jolly fine Spiral Skies has a story in Issue 3 which is out now. So yes, a little bit pleased.

Eye, Eye,

Blickin' 'eck Ms Lane's poetry is to be published in a high-quality 'coffee-break' magazine. Well done m'lady :)

So glad to hear you've sorted out those eyes of youurs. Does that mean you'll be posting a bit more often of your blog now that you can see the screen clearly? It's a known fact that the more words you post on your blog the better a writer you'll will become. Trust me cause I know what I'm talking about! ;-)

Congratulations, Lane! Just the sort of news I needed to perk up my day! (And happy that you got the eye business sorted out too.)

well done - very exciting about your poetry and beautiful restraint in the delivery of your news. I am squeamish about eyes but have got contact lens. I remember well my first trial attempt of putting in and taking out- the opticians said sorry madam but we can't send you home with them as you can't get them out. second time i did pass and took them home. anyway sorry to ramble but I had a sparkly eye incident and was told it was an auroral migraine or something like that.but it only happened once. bye.

Congratulations,Lane
A well deserved success.

Glad you got your eyes checked out. But, and I quote "(PVD) is a common condition which occurs in about 75 per cent of people over the age of 65" - you look very young and fit for your age! ;-)

And when are we going to get to see the new specs?

Oh, and congratulations obviously. Well done!

Fiona said...

So glad your eyes are behaving themselves a little more and you have lovely(?) new specs.

And a published poem is so cool.

Here's looking at you...

Many congratulations on the poem publication, Lane - and good to see you blogging again. We were all becoming quite concerned, you know. Have to say I get the squeams with anything to do with the eye, but I clicked on the link to find out more - and hope those pesky floaters aren't part of the deal for you. Have the flashing lights gone? L xx

Good grief, my comment has come up twice. Don't worry, Lane, you don't have double vision. Have no idea how I managed that. L x

Lane! you're back! you have new eyes! You don't suffer from migraines, and you're just a little bit pleased because a poem of yours is being published! :) ... I'm a little bit pleased too. (grin) (doing the little bit pleased dance!) But I want to read your poem, and I clicked on the link but the monetary notation didn't translate into Canadian dollars... :( ... Actually, I can't help the smile on my face, your back at blogger, you have new eyes, and you've just published a poem, even if I can't read it, I'm tickled pink! :)

XXOOOO :)

Young Amy had a bit of PVD party on Thursday, it being her fourth birthday - so lots of jelly.

I shall certainly pop into Smith's to read your poem. Hope it's not a weepy one or I might have to buy some tissues and I am v. broke at the moment.

I was given the wrong prescription for my glasses and just thought "oh dear my eyes are getting worse and worse" and it was not until my next eye test two years later that the fault was discovered. I am so glad your eyes are better - like you I could not cope with contact lens.

Congratulations on your success on the literary front - will pop into Smiths.

Amanda said...

Glad you can see now,Lane :-)

And CONGRATULATIONS on your poem - can't wait to read it.

Casdok said...

Congrats!!
And am pleased you got your eyes sorted!

Hello M'dear, (step away from the computer now you can see me, I don't want to frighten you!). That's a jolly good article on PVD. Himself (who is not over 65 either) has a touch of it and I started it after Ist baby (I blame all the pushing and shoving!). Anyway, glad you are sorted. And many congratulations on the poetry success, just brilliant. You are allowed to have blogging breaks if it means it ups the publication rate. Well done. Did you enter the Mslexia poetry comp? If you did, I think my chances of being placed have tumbled even further!

Leigh said...

Congrats on the poem - I'll be first in the queue on May 7th (which, incidentally, was my grandmother's birthday - 102 she'd be now...)

As for the PVD, well I looked up that link (being partial to a bit of jelly), and I must say that you're looking fine for a lady of over sixty-five.

DJ Kirkby said...

Oh this post made me laugh. I felt exactly the same way when I got my first pair of glasses, it was incredible to realise that there were individual stones underfoot and that it wasn't just a dirt road that I walked to school one etc! Congrats on the poem.

SueG said...

Hey, terrific news about your poem! Congrats! And call me old fashioned, but I think there's a lot to be said for vision. If nothing else, correcting it provides another great shopping opportunity!

Lucy Diamond said...

Eye, eye, that's fab news about the poem! And glad about your new peepers too. I love a happy ending. x

Lane said...

Tom Foolery - I'll always trust you TF. You speak the troof:-)

Nik - Thank you:-)

Liane - thank you too. Hope you have a perky weekend:-)

Sonia - The Teenager had to prove she could put them in and take them out three times before she could take them away. Her eyes were streaming but she persevered. Well done for getting the hang of yours and I hope the ocular migraine was a one off.

Felix - Thank you:-)

Babaloo - I know! I look at least 63:-)
I'll photo new specs when I can wheedle the use of daughter's camera. Mine is kaput:-(

Fiona - Looking right back atchya. Quite clearly too:-)

Lorna F - Thanks for concern:-) No more flashy lights for a while but floaters (horrible word) - yes. Pesky but getting used to it.
As for double posting of comment. I've managed three before. It's a skill:-)

Dar - Ha! Stop dancing now and save your energy for all that hard work you're doing m'dear. Remember I can see you now:-)
As for reading the poem? I'll find a way;-)
And thank you! x

DOT - It's not a weepie dot. And it's short so I won't keep you hanging around:-)
Did you indulge in the jelly too?

Lindsay - two years with the wrong prescription is not good - and damaging. Glad the mistake was eventually picked up.

Amanda - thank yoooou:-)

Casdok - thank you too m'dear:-)

ChrisH - Gosh you started it young Chris. Glad your last check up went ok too.
I didn't enter the Mslexia poetry. Wouldn't have stood a snowball's. However, I'm looking forward to seeing your name on the winner's list. Preferably right at the top:-)

Leigh - But where's my bus pass? That's what I'd like to know.
Funny how we remember dates. So many dates:-(

DJ - I know, it's incredible. I've been wearing specs for ages but this time, I can really see. It's a revelation!

SueG - True. There's a lot to be said for actually being to see what you're buying, and face furniture comes in so many designs today. So different from my first National Health John Lennon shaped ones as a kid.

Lucy D - I like a happy ending too. That's (just one of the reasons) why I like your books:-)

Pleased to hear you've got the eyes sorted Mrs x And thrilled about the poem. I wonder if every issue of First Edition is going to have one of my blog buddies in it? If so, I may have to take out a subscription.

I thought this was going to be a post about laser treatment to cure myopia - and I wasn't brave enough to click on the link because I am a very squeamish person. Delighted you can see again properly and even more delighted for your exciting news about a poem in print.

Hullaballoo said...

It's such a relief to get the right prescription, isn't it? I suffered in the same way.

Congratulations. Your restraint is indeed humbling. Jolly well done and enjoy that lovely feeling. I am so blind I am known as Colonel Blinky! There's noting worse than bad eyesight if you are a writer. Takes the joy out of it but thank God for corrective devices. I wear lenses and specs alternately. I can stick my finger in my eyes to search for a missing lens when it lodges itself above my eyeball! Been wearing lenses since I was sixteen - great things.

You know - just yesterday morning I thought - I wonder what Lane is up to? And here you are. Getting new glasses and getting published.

How pleasing indeed! Good on you!

Ooh, brilliant news Miss Lane! How exciting :0) And yay! We are in the First Edition gang togevvah!!!

Thank goodness your peepers are mended. I used to be one of those people who teach people how to us contact lenses. What a laugh - I could almost feel people's stomachs churning :0)

Oh my goodness, my son has nystagmus too - I don't know of anyone else who has it. His eyes are ultra-sensitive too, so contact lenses are a no-no - as is driving, which is heartbreaking as cars have always been his first love.

Jolly well done on your super new vision, and big congratulations on the poem publication!! I was flipping through First Edition in WH Smith recently, but I'll definitely buy a copy now :o))

claire p said...

Wow well done with the poem. I had one published once, I was six.

Glad you got your eyes sorted. As you're squeamish I won't tell you how I used to help my nan take out, wash and replace her false one...;)

Lane said...

HelenH - I hope so Helen. So hen are you going to submit something?

french Fancy - Glad I'm not the only squeamish woose about eyes:-) And thank you.

Hullaballoo - it certainly is. Hope you got sorted too:-)

MOB - thank you. You're a brave eye woman indeed. When the optician warned The Teenager about lenses floating above the eyeball, i felt quite faint;-)

Aims - thank you. Sorry I haven't been arou

Laurie - thank you. Doubly nice indeed!

Queenie - thank you(and quivering slightly that people will read and think 'twaddle':-)

Spiral - I've just read your sooper dooper story. Right good it is too!
But you were one of those technicians....?? Euurgh:-)

Debs - thank you very much m'dear:-)

PAt P - and thank you too:-)

Karen - Wow, I don't know anyone else who has it either! At one time daughter was officially 'partially sighted'. Her eyesight has improved with age but still quite bad and now won't get any better. Such a shame about the driving for your son. That's just so sad, poor lad.

Claire P - I'm so glad you didn't tell me that! You were a very good granddaughter:-)

Here I am, reviving an older post for my visit from the pitch party.

I had an episode of PVD last autumn, and my vision is still a little odd: I find it harder to cope with high contrast, and tire more easily AND have lots of floaters. But it's not flared up again since, and so long as I don't bunjee jump (like I ever would...) I should be fine. I hope you are too.

Lane said...

Jane - Hi there and thanks for visiting.
The floaters are a right pain but apparently you get used to them eventually.
Suppose I'd better cancel my bungee jump then:-)

Very very late congratulations on the poem publication! That's fantastic. :)
Hope the eyes are improving.
