Excuses

I've been a bit neglectful of the blog recently. And of you. And myself come to that. You should see the hair.

Funnily enough, the subject of last week's Novel Racers coffee morning post was 'How do you manage to make time to write when you're silly busy?' There were some interesting answers, not least about the state of our homes. The plain fact is, when life gets naughty busy, the blogging is the first thing to be put aside and quite rightly so. But then, sadly, the writing follows because no bill is going to be paid as a result of it, no parents taken here and there, no children/dogs fed, watered and exercised. It's just a simple case of priorities.

I've also been having a bit of eye trouble. Had an 'episode' in the supermarket on Saturday, which resulted in an abandoned trolley and phone calls to find out why one eye had inexplicably stopped doing what it is designed to i.e - see things without a full firework display in the way. Luckily 'normal' sight came back but 'eye people' must be seen. Reading the computer screen has become increasingly tiring, which is another reason why I've not been around to visit so much.

So, those are my excuses.

Ooh and The Teenager had a birthday last week. She was 17. There was a fish and chip supper and chocolate cake. And her provisional driving licence has been applied for. Heaven help us. I may need several new pairs of eyes in order to teach her. And maybe a spare heart.

I don't know if I have any eye spells but if I find one, I'll have an owl send it over.

And Virginia Woolf was so right.

Babaloo said...

Oh, hope the eye people fix you up soon!

And, maybe you should consider getting someone else to teach the teenager. Just an idea. Could save your eyes, heart and sanity. And hers, maybe. ;-)

Happy birthday to the Teenager and yes - eye people need to be consulted.
I hope it's just a bit of tiredness and nothing serious.

Don't like the sound of the eye spells - take great care.

I really do not like the sound of the eye fireworks at all. It does rather sound as if you've been overdoing it.

Being, allegedly, grown ups, we can do whatever we like in life. Unfortunately, we can't do it all.

Take it easy, Mrs Lane.

Dar said...

I don't have anything witty and entertaining to say... Tried to think of something along that line about the fireworks in your eye, or maybe something light and reassuring but all I could think of was that I hope it's not serious and I'm glad you are going to see about it. Just take care of yourself, whatever needs doing to do that.

Hope your eye problem sorts itself out quickly, Lane. Life does have a way of getting in the way of blogging and writing doesn't it?x (Happy 17th to The Teenager!)

Fiona - Ms Woolf was very right. A room, a door and a lock would be good. I'll look out for that owl:-)

Babaloo - We'll give it a trial lesson and see how we go. I have a feeling a may not be the right person for the job:-)

Felix - thank you. I'm sure it is but best to get checked.

Liz - Thanks Liz. I will. x

Spiral - Whoever said we can ''have/do it all' was a dork.
Grownupness requires priorities (and chocolate)

dar - Thank you m'dear. I shall be off to see someone shortly. will report back:-)

Amanda - Life can certainly be a bit inconsiderate eh?:-)
And thanks.

Sorry about eye trouble - hope you are sorted out soon.

I know my eyesight has suffered thanks to computers. But we can't stay away from them! Hope your eye prob resolves itself quickly.

Fish and chip supper AND choc cake - that sounds so good. Bon anniversaire to The Teenager.

McBöbø said...

Oh dear, how scary for you. It would be in a supermarket, of course, for maximum awkwardness.

As excuses go, eye trouble is absolutely in the top 10. So pace yourself and those eyes.

French Fancy said...

As long as you keep in blog touch say once a month I won't have to worry about you. Hope the eye problem is easily medicined - you might have red eye drops and see the world through the proverbial rose tinted specs

SueG said...

Ooh. The eye thing is worrying! No pain, though, I hope. I like the idea of red eye drops (especially with a new driver in the house!).

HelenMHunt said...

That sounds a bit like an ocular migraine honey. I've had a couple and my optician says I have to see my doctor - but I haven't because of all the busy stuff. Be more sensible than me x

Flowerpot said...

You take care, Lane. We only have one sets f eyes! Best keep them shut with the Teenager driving though....!

DOT said...

Computer screens are designed to destroy eyes, so take care.

As for a seventeen year old, provisional licence and personal driving lessons - DON'T EVEN THINK OF IT.

My Dad and I didn't speak for years after his first attempt to give me a lesson. :)

JJ Beattie said...

Crikey, I don't like the sound of that m'dear. Please see eye doctors soonish...

Happy birthday to The Teenager. Fish and Chip supper following by chocolate cake sounds blissful. Good choice.

What Fiona said. Hope it gets better. And I hope the teenager dosen't take as long as I did to get her licence (15 years!).

Lane, so sorry to hear you've been unwell. As someone who suffers from migraines and is therefore able to empathise with random firework displays you have my sympathies - but please, please, please go get yourself checked out and get some medicine.

And happy birthday to The Teenager - a landmark age that!

Eye fireworks sound fun, but probably aren't. I do hope you get it sorted, and stop overdoing it! Easier said than done, I know.

Good luck to the teenager with her driving - mine passed her test last week!

Tam said...

I'm a migraine sufferer too and know that not being able to see properly is alarming and upsetting. Hope they find the root of the problem quickly.

And how lovely to see you in Blogland, even if it is a bit sporadic over the coming weeks :-)

Captain Black said...

The symptoms of your eye problem seem very similar to the preludes to migraines I used to get. I hope I'm wrong!

ChrisH said...

Okay, everyone has said it so I am sure you are doing the right thing and have seen Someone Who Knows. I suffer from migraines BUT I am also very short-sighted and at my level there is always a risk of retinal detachment so I am hyper aware of potential problems. I hope that your eye problems are minor ones and you get a bit of 'you' time so you can relax. Take care.

Cathy said...

I'll add to the chorus, make sure you get the eyes checked out.

As for 17 year olds, mine has the provisional licence and a donation from grandfather towards lessons, but all he wants to do is get a motorbike. In outer London! Eek.

Och well ye were missed but now we know why you weren't around. I've been so busy that I haven't much time to read blogs much lately.

Money must be earned first!

Shirley Wells said...

I agree with Helen; it sounds a bit like an ocular migraine. Hateful things. Get it checked pdq and take it easy!

Happy birthday to The Teenager. As for the driving lessons, forget it. I can still remember the one and only lesson my dad gave me. The stuff of nightmares.

Take care!

Take good care of the eyes. I'm due to see the eye people soon too - funny how the screen gets all blurry by the end of the day - and that without a drink anywhere nearby! Must be age, eh? ;-)

Hope the eye problem is sorted out without complication, Lane. Mine started doing bizarre stuff a time or two and staying away from the computer for a few days put them to rights again.

Lane said...

Lindsay - thank you:-)

Dumdad - fish and chip and choc cake supper was very good. And healthy if you include the fish:-)

Mcbobo - supermarket, crowds, bright lights = not good. I will do some pacing:-)

French Fancy - rose tinted drops would be good. Might make one look a bit hungover though:-)
And thank you. I promise to stay in blog touch:-)

Sueg - no pain thankfully but with a learner driver around, there will be pain enough:-)

Helen - I think you could be right. I will be sensible and you should be too!

Flowerpot - lol! What sort of a teacher would I be then? Sensible!:-)

DOT -oh dear, was it that bad? Come to think of it, I would never have let my dad teach me either ... and that was back in the days of empty roads:-)

JJ - Thanks m'dear:-)

Claire P - but you made it in the end:-)

Nik - thank you. Mess up with appointments today but going to be seen asap. Thanks too for 'you know what' advice:-)

Karen - congrats to your Teen! Does that mean an end to being a taxi service?

Tam - thanks. It's nice to be here again:-)

Captain - I hope so too. We'll just have to see. Migraines are the pits:-(

ChrisH - the retinal detachment thing was one of the things they mentioned. Have a list of things to look out for. *shudder*
And thank you.

Cathy - noooo. Big eeek. Won't he have driving lessons instead?? Please say he will.

TF -I've got carrots in m'shepherds pie tonight. Does that count?

And one word to explain? BREATHING.

MOB - hope you're not too busy MOB. Money making can be so damn time consuming:-)

Shirley - you're the second person here to warn me off teaching The Teenager. Seems to have brought back some rather vivd memories for you both:-) I have been warned!

Lane said...

Absolute - you sneaked in there. Age was one of the things the eye people mentioned. She said, xxx is a condition which affects the over 60's. I was most affronted:-)

Liane - computer screens are a killer. When the words start jumping, it's time to rest 'em:-)

My brother has things like that happen to his eyes.

Get thee to an eye doctor poste haste girl!

Fireworks in your eyes? Sounds frightening. I hope your eye is much better now.

Happy birthday to the teenager. I have a 17 year old who's learning to drive, quite frightening being a passenger!

Graeme K Talboys said...

I get that, which is why I see my optician at least once a year (and my doctor as well). Do please get it checked as your eyesight is much more important than blogging etc.

Lorna F said...

Lane, my elder son turned 17 three weeks ago. Chip supper and choc cake featured too! Happy birthday to yours.Maybe we can set up an arranged marriage. Strangely, when I was pregnant with said son, I was Christmas shopping and suddenly lost the central part of my vision, then weird neon-coloured darts and spirals and shooting things were going off in my peripheral vision. Trotted off to Boots Opticians and begged someone to take a look - they were closing, so declined. Cheers. On the bus home, panicky, I remembered that I had had a phase of migraines when I was fourteen, and each was preceded by optical shenanigans like these and sure enough I went on to have a (pregnancy-induced?) migraine. I noticed that one of your commentators mentioned optical migraines - so maybe this is what it is. Whatever it is, I hope you get sorted out and freed from worry and frustration. Take care x

Queenie said...

Eek, that sounds scary. (The eye thing, that is. Although the provisionally driving Teenager sounds quite scary too.) Hope the problem proves readily diagnosable and treatable.

Thanks so much for your message about tomorrow. xxx

I agree with Helen - it sounds like a migraine-type thing. It sounds to me as if you are so stressed out running around after everyone that you are overdoing it. I hope you feel better soon.

All my kids' 17th birthday presents were weekly driving lessons. The age difference between Emily and Garry is 22 months. Emily had one lesson a week. Four failed tests, three driving instructors and one almost bankrupt mother later, Garry turned 17. You could have hung your coat on Emily's bottom lip when I said she had to put her lessons on hold because I couldn't afford two lessons a week.

Luckily Garry passed his test first time after 11 weeks (Emily still doesn't like to talk about it!) It was a Suzuki Jeep and practising off-road that finally gave her the confidence to pass a test.

Nicky took about 18 lessons and passed second time.

Angie said...

Oh Lane, please do take care of yourself! The eye trouble sounds scary. Do you have migraines? It sounds like 'aura' as others have mentioned.
Good luck with the driving lessons. I have good memories of my mom heaped over in tears because she was laughing so hard when I learned to drive a stick (manual).

A migraine perhaps dear Lane? Let us know what the optomitrist says! Oh and buy driving lessons for the birthday girl, it is the only option that leaves parents sane at the end...

Your eye sounds a bit frightening. Hope you find out what it is.

Happy birthday to your daughter! :)

My resident Geek Squad talked me into buying a widescreen monitor to help with old eyes--not that you're having that problem,Lane! Also been experimenting with some of those almost gel eye drops which help with symptoms of too many hours staring at screen. I've also noticed that, like in real world social settings, sometimes you just need to take a break from blog racing.

The Teenager old enough to learn to drive? And to think that last year she was just concerned about her appearance in the pic she allowed you to show on the blog! You'll be a good teacher, I'm sure. My teacher was an elderly adopted grandfather and he lived many years after I got license!

What a fantastic birthday meal. Fish and chips and chocolate, bliss. My mouth's watering even at this time of day.

The eye problem is a bit of a worry. Do go and see the medico, eyes are too precious to ignore. My Dad only had one so I know!

Cait O'Connor said...

I am late to this as I have been too busy to read blogs of late. I have enjoyed catching up with yours. I hope you got your eyes checked out?
Fish and chips and choc cake has made me feel very hungry!

Jean said...

Sounds like the eye trouble I've been getting (averaging at about every 2 months or so) for past few years. Suddenly starts, and lasts anything from about 5 to 20 minutes. Eye check revealed nothing wrong, so doc thinks optical migraines. I always thought migraine meant headache but doc said, not necessarily, you can get the visual disturbances without the headache. It's a nuisance but livable with once you know it's not serious. You do right to get it checked out though to make sure. I hope all goes well for you.

DOT said...

Smack! How long since you have blogged? Sit in the corner over there and DON'T play with your hair until you've written something suitable :)

Lane said...

Thank you everyone. And apologies for not even answering your comments for a week. How shabby is that.
Seems like optical migraines are the reason for the fireworks. Haven't had a repeat performance. More checks soon.

And DOT - ouch. Cripes - better go and write something. Soon:-)

Jenn said...

Optical migraines? Is that what its called? I sometimes see zig-zags out of my bad eye when I'm tired. Must get it checked.
