BSOD

I am Lappyless. My laptop exploded. Actually I exaggerate. It went pffft in the middle of what was probably the most scintillating sentence ever written. Or maybe it was the dullest and the laptop died of boredom.

Anyway, my 'puter access is limited at the moment. I'm using The Younger One's computer to write this but it's not the same as I have to sit on a tiny chair and have two thousand pairs of eyes staring at me. I don't mind Paddington - he's cool - but some of these bears/cats/horses/sheep have a sinister look about them. And I've been worried, big time, for what has been lost.
So, I had a word with St Isidore who's the patron saint of laptops. Indeed, he is the patron saint of the entire internet. I expected him to ignore me, seeing as I haven't been around for over thirty years. He's obviously not one to hold a grudge though, because behold, data is being retrieved and programmes painstakingly reinstalled. And of course I must also thank G, for it is he who has done all the hard work.

Remember - back up, back up, back up. Because when the pfffft comes, you really don't want to be cursing St Isidore's boss or his mother. Or whimpering. Not that I was, of course. Much.

Hope to be back, around to visit, and (relatively) normal soon.

Ugh, you poor thing! I'm glad to hear data is being retrieved and hope you recover everything.
Thanks for the friendly reminder...off to back up!

Holy Moses! Thank God for St Isidore ;-) I hope (and pray) that you retrieve all your stuff m'dear. Long live pen and paper :) TFx

So it's St Isidore we need to pray to when things go wrong online and 'puterwise. Good to know.
Glad to hear that at least not everything is lost.

As one who has suffered this before I now back up obsessively!!! I think I have back up disks all over the bloody place and don't even get me started on the memory sticks!!!

Hope all is recovered :-)

Hmm, taps foot, so where was St Izzywhizzy when MY laptop went into terminal decline a couple of weeks ago?? Does, he perhaps, work for Dell, since that's where I had to scurry on the hurryup (and now have the dented credit card to show for it)? Hope you are back to full power soon - watch those eyes!

I have to say, you make your trials seem so entertaining. :) ... I feel really badly for enjoying reading this, but you it's not my fault you write the way you do. I could just see you sitting there on that little chair with all those plushies staring at you. (grin) ... Hmmmm, I wonder who the patron saint of Mac desktops is?

Aaaggh! That's my worst nightmare! Fingers crossed the data retrieval goes smoothly.

And thank you for reminding me to back up novel 2. 33,000 words I never want to type from scratch again!

Ha, I just backed up all my writing on a thumb drive. :)

EEEEK, Lane, How awful. I hope all the work is retrieved. And I'm off to back up now too.

Very scary indeed! I hope nothing gets lost. Which reminds me, I must go back up me stuff! x

What a complete pain in the bum. I hope your laptop is revived soon.

Thanks for the timely reminder.

How awful, I can't imagine being without my laptop now, when I think I've only been computer illiterate for a few years, what on earth did I use to do with all my spare time!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd go and backup all my stuff if I knew how to!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Ugh. That's the worst. Any by the number of comments you've got, you're certainly not alone. You know, it's a cruel joke. The gods get us so attached to these damn computers that we can't move an inch without them, and then -- as you so said so onamotopoetically -- pfffft! Hope everything's retrieved!

Oh you poor thing - I hope the laptop is fixed and restored soon - and that nothing was lost! Including the most scintillating sentence in the history of words. And of course it was scintillating - what else could it have been, I mean, really?!

oh no - nothing like being lapless. ACtuallyI dont have a laptop but Himself does. Hope all is fixed soon!

How awful! I have been eying laptops but the computer nerd (expensive) who is on hand when necessary advised me not to buy one, not even to save much needed space, because when they go wrong they are much harder to put right! I do hope you are online soon.

I feel for you. Hope you have no more pffffts'!

Oh Lane, how horrible - though of course you have managed to entertain us mightily with the way you've described it. Those soft toys sound like they came from a Stephen King novel. I have a friend whose house was struck by lightning a few years ago: it blew every single socket in the house and fried all the computers, so at least you had another one to fall back on. Salutary tale - but do I back up efficiently? Do I ****! :)

You're all diligently backing up now, which is good to hear. I wonder, though, how many of you have tried to restore your backed-up files. It's all very well having the comfort of backups, but what if they don't work when you need them?

Old software developers' proverb: test, test, then test again.

Just a thought.

You are very lucky to retrieve all your data.
It may be sinister having those thousands of eyes watching you but what I think is even more sinister is the fact that they all move around when you are not looking at them.

Annie sends everything to herself which I try to do too. Doesn't always work because I open them and delete them by mistake.

Another saint to ask for help. Good, I need all the help I can get.

I swear, swear, that at first glance I saw your post title as BDSM. Had to do a double take there. Don't know what's going on in my head sometimes. (So what is BSOD? I'm thinking, um, overdose of bovine excrement?)

Hope you're fully restored, up and running soon.

Faye said...

So, how tall are you Lane? I'm getting a picture of you sitting on a little painted chair with knees under chin. Critters with many eyes staring down from shelves and ledges. Peggy F and Teas totally inconvenienced because you sleep in the kitchen, not bedroom during the day. That's is just wrong!

I'm getting out my geek squad notes on "how to back up".

Tam said...

Back up! I cannot stress this enough but do I do it? No. Am I supposedly an IT professional? Yes.

Don't do as I do, do as I say!

I fought the emergence of the computer culture but now that I'm on one more than half of each day I feel lost when the system breaks down in a similiar way I do if I have no car. I don't miss typewriters.

I hope your online life is humming smoothly again soon.

Hurrah for G (I guess it's not the god man we're talking about here). Hope to see you back in business soon.

Hope it all gets sorted Sweetie. St Isidore sounds cool - St Jude (Patron Saint of Lost Causes) is always worth a try at such times as well :) St Jude and I go back a long way x

An exploding laptop can never be a good thing!!

Hope it's back soon, with lovely data intact. I tend to post all my writing stuff onto a private blog these days as a back-up Just In Case :o)

Oh no! I live in fear of that happening with my dinosour. Hope you get it all back. I nicked hubbies data stick just in case. Now I shall have to go away and back up everything!!

Thanks chaps. Happy to report that all docs have been saved and laptop is working like new (ish). Am now going to back up, and send stuff to my own email and also put on private blog - just to be sure. And the best thing is not sitting on tiny chair amongst the furries.

Faye you pictured the knees under the chin and the confused dogs just right:-)

And wordtryst BSOD is Blue Screen of Death. I have no idea what BDSM stands for of course;-)

First time here--came over from Babaloo, but you already knew that, if you track such things.

Love your profile quote--it's one of my favorite lines.

Lane, what trouble. We've all been there. I need to do some backup...when will I? Great Dylan line in the profile (above comment mentions it too)...I hear that in my head often...yes, a bunch of songs just float around in there...I took a course in college on the poetry of Dylan-SDSU, CA...can you believe it? I'm in Puerto Rico now...making my way through this interesting life. Enjoyed your post! <3

Ooh it's like a limb falling off when the laptop's out of action. I hate it. Glad to hear your back in action, Lane.
